An Interactive Streaming App That Lets You Talk To The TV

The Rules:

Every week I breakdown startup pitches with the added hook that you can invest whether you’re accredited or not (if you don't know what that means, click here).

I base my review on a 3-minute founder pitch and some light diligence.

My a scoring system is not a validation of idea, or grading for likelihood of success. It just means, all things being equal at launch — this startup has these boxes checked.

What I look for:

  1. Founder — ability to lead, sell into and influence a given market

  2. Idea — is it inevitable or solving a BIG problem in a scaleable way

  3. TAM — how big is the total addressable market

  4. Traction — do they have meaningful early traction

  5. Unfair Advantage — do they have a competitive edge

★★★☆☆

Company Overview

ClashTV is an interactive live streaming app to participate while viewing your favorite games, shows and sporting events 👉 Watch The Pitch 📺

Key People: Ivan Isakov (Chairman MTV Networks Vostok, Napster investor), Brian Lisi (launched college streaming platform, Stadium), & Anthony Lacavaro (former Executive Director of Morgan Stanley)

Traction: For starters, ClashTV is taking on a $300B advertising market that’s being heavily disrupted by social networks and cord cutting — ClashTV is taking advantage of this trend by offering original content via Dyckman Basketball, premium MMA, and Esports championships beaming to 120 million+ viewers through Fubo, Pluto & Sling simulcasts. Since launch, ClashTV streams have grown by 60x and they plan to begin generating revenue in December.

Here's what I like: I’m 100% convinced NextGen social networking will take place within our content — whether that’s fans directing the content (Fan Controlled Football) or the content directing us (Juked). ClashTV is attempting to capitalize on this shift by leveraging live streams and gamification to generate engagement that ultimately leads to ad conversions. I like the focus on niche, passionate communities at launch. It gives ClashTV the ability to fully showcase its value prop, and there’s no question the founders and advisory team have the industry pull to maximize the opportunity.

Here's what I don't love: The biggest challenge I think ClashTV will face is UX. Given the proportion of streams that take place on mobile, small screens simply do not leave a lot of room for a great user experience. And, when you factor in the age of typical viewers of its content — it puts further pressure on the in-app experience. I could see this playing out successfully on the big screen; but I still believe the future of media is trending more towards virtual vs augmented — which is not to say ClashTV cannot still be wildly successful.

Who should invest and why: Media, content distribution and ad models have been evolving steadily for the past 25 years, but the next decade is going to blow your mind. So, placing bets across the field might be a smart move and whether or not you think the future is metaverse, virtual, augmented or some combination therein; one thing is certain — the investment opportunity is massive!

As always, startup investing is super high risk, anything can happen.
